Relations with Law Enforcement Agencies
It shall be the policy of the School District to maintain a cooperative relationship with law enforcement and other governmental agencies.
The District finds that the presence of law enforcement officials at District facilities and at school activities is to be encouraged in support of education, to promote a positive attitude by students toward law enforcement officials and to maintain a safe and supportive educational environment.
In furtherance of the foregoing policy the District may enter into agreements with the City of Madras, Jefferson County or other public law enforcement agencies to provide law enforcement officials for the District, to serve as liaison between the District and the community or to deliver curriculum to students in an approved program.
The District shall adopt procedures to implement this policy in a manner which both serves the purposes of the policy and protects all applicable rights of students and parents/legal guardians which may arise expressly from this policy or rule and those rights which may arise independent of District policy or rule.
The procedures shall include guidelines for:
1. Interviewing of students on school property and/or during school hours and school events;
2. Release of students to law enforcement officials on school property and/or during school hours and school events;
3, Contacting law enforcement following criminal acts or suspicion of criminal acts.
The Board specifically authorizes principals to use discretion and good judgment to protect student rights and public safety when guidelines are inadequate to direct unique or unusual circumstances.
