Student Discipline Procedures

Resolution of Rule Violations

1. Minor rule violations should be handled by the classroom teacher or assigned staff member.

2. Repeated violation or a minor rule should be handled by the appropriate staff member.

3. Violations of a major rule or repeated minor violations may be referred to the administration. Since any violation might result in suspension and/or expulsion, such incidents shall be documented.

4. Illegal and/or dangerous activities will be referred to the administration, who may also contact law enforcement authorities.

5. Alcohol, tobacco, or chemical abuse violations are subject to intervention and treatment activities. If intervention treatment activities are refused by student and/or parent/guardian, normal discipline procedures will apply. When the occurrence includes other serious rule violations, disciplinary procedures may accompany intervention activities.

For any punishment other than suspension or expulsion the nature and duration of the punishment shall be determined by the teacher and/or administrator involved.

Provisions of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) will be followed when applicable.

A parent who is dissatisfied with the district's provision for special education services is entitled to file a request for a due process hearing with the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Oregon Department of Education, Public Service Building, 255 Capitol Street NE, Salem, Oregon, 97310-0203.

Students and/or parents may appeal any disciplinary decision to the immediate supervisor of the responsible employee. Specific suspension and expulsion appeals procedures are described in Policy JGD-AR.

Suspensions shall be documented. When determining punishment, the current year and the previous two years record may be considered.

These student discipline procedures specifically apply to students riding school vehicles.
