Attendance

The Board believes that regular attendance is a necessary requirement of all students. Regular attendance promotes responsible habits that lead to success in the world of work and in advanced education. The Board believes that parents and students must accept the responsibility for regular attendance. There is a direct correlation between attendance and success in school. To promote regular attendance the Board requires that:

1. School personnel consistently enforce ORS 339.010-339.090, the compulsory school attendance law;

2. The district establish and enforce rules and procedures for attendance consistent with Oregon statutes and Oregon Minimum Standards for Elementary and Secondary Schools. The rules and procedures shall set standards of attendance required to gain credit toward graduation. Rules developed under this policy shall include specific assurances of due process for students with disabilities;

3. All students comply with rules and regulations regarding attendance and pursue the prescribed course of study;

4. All students be on time to school each day and to each class during the school day;

5. Students remain at home when ill with a communicable disease until attendance is authorized by a qualified health official;

6. Students shall not attend school when suspended or expelled;

7. Prevention of truancy shall be the goal of the combined efforts of school personnel working jointly with local social agencies, court officers, and juvenile officers. However, unauthorized absence and tardiness shall be considered truancy and enforced under ORS 339.065-339.090;

8. The district apply a system of approving excused absences as authorized under ORS 339.065. A student who has absences excused must still fulfill the course requirements for earning grades, credit and advancement toward graduation;

9. Home tutors be provided for students during extended illnesses. Parents and students will be afforded due process and appeals procedures under procedures established in Policy #730 Appeals Procedure;

The Board supports alternatives to disciplinary or legal procedures when they can have a predictably positive impact on student attendance.
