Promotion and Retention of Students
The Board does not support the use of retention as a punitive measure for lack of academic achievement. Retention should be considered as the last alternative in the student's progression toward graduation. It should only be considered when the student performs below potential and, in the judgment of both school officials and parents, growth can be predicted due to retention. Retention shall not be considered when a student is performing at capacity with little expectation of change in academic performance. When it can be shown that retention is in the best interest of the student, the Board directs the administration to provide procedures for such retention.
For identified 8th grade students who have not demonstrated adequate performance in preparation for academic work at the high school level, the Board directs the establishment of a summer assistance program.
Students who are required to attend a summer session, but do not, may be retained at the 8th grade level and provided individual alternative programs until adequate progress has been demonstrated.
