Achievement Grading

Purpose

The purpose of grading student performance is to provide a report of achievement in meeting course goals to both parents/guardians and the student. It is important for parents to be regularly informed of their child’s achievements to aid educational and career planning.

Assignment of Grades

It is the responsibility of the teacher to assign grades and to grade student achievement. The assignment of grades will be in accordance with board policy and procedures.

Courses Graded

A student shall receive a grade for all courses completed. Teachers are responsible for issuing a grade for the student in accordance with district and building reporting procedures.

Basis for Grading

Student mastery of course goals and the state benchmarks form the basis for grading. While illness, lack of interest and effort, poor study skills, tardiness and poor attendance may cause low achievement, they should not in themselves be considered as criteria for determining a student’s grade.

Grades should be based on objective measures of outcomes, or on standards that can be checked objectively or rated consistently with a high degree of reliability.

Distribution of Grades

Distribution of grades should differentiate among levels of achievement.

Make-up Privilege

Where make-up work is permitted, a number of days equal to the number of days missed as a minimum will be allowed students as time to make up their work.

Special Education Students

Areas of student achievement that are covered by an IEP shall be graded jointly by the special education teacher and regular classroom teacher(s). This grade should reflect student achievement in relation to IEP goals, not regular course goals.

Grading Scale

Achievement shall be reported using a three-point scale in grades K-2 and a five-point scale in grades 3-12.

Final Grades

Final course grades will be cumulative or averages depending on the course descriptions and building requirements. Following recommendations from the Oregon University System, transcripts will reflect a student’s grade history, thus retaken classes will not negate the prior grade.

High School Grade Point Average (GPA)

A student’s high school GPA shall be determined by the average of all graded courses completed. For purposes of averaging, letter grades shall be weighted for AP (advanced placement) courses.
