Instructional Resources/Instructional Materials
The Board believes that textbooks provide an important and essential source of information for the instructional program. Textbooks and other instructional material adopted by the Board will be selected by the appropriate professional personnel in consultation with parents and citizens. The input of staff and students will be encouraged. Final decisions on purchase will rest with the superintendent or designee, subject to official adoption by the Board in the case of textbooks and other instructional materials. The selection of the textbooks shall conform to the rules of the State Textbook Commission and unless specifically waived by the appropriate State Department of Education authority, the textbooks shall be selected from the official State Board adopted textbook list unless state-approved independent adoption procedures are followed.
The superintendent shall direct textbook selection committees to consider the following criteria when selecting textbooks:
Textbooks shall be free from racial bias and shall represent various cultures and ethnic, religious and social groups objectively and accurately.
Textbooks shall be free from sex bias and role-stereotyping.
Textbooks shall be rigorous, challenging and readable at each grade level.
Textbooks shall contain methodology and teaching strategies consistent with district education philosophies, values, goals, and planned courses of study.
Textbooks shall be chosen to assure continuity and coordination, grades K-12.
The superintendent will recommend textbook selections to the Board for adoption in accordance with State Textbook Adoption cycles.
To be in compliance with the requirements of federal law, the Board directs the superintendent to distribute curriculum materials and instructional supplies to district schools in such a manner that ensures all schools receive equivalent materials.
Any parent or patron who objects to the selection of any textbook may appeal through the procedures established under district policy KL - Public Complaints.
