IGBHC -AR - Providing Information to Parents and Students on Alternative Education Programs

Providing Information

to Parents and Students on Alternative Education Programs

The appropriate administration of any district school shall provide notification to parents, students, or guardians about the availability of alternative education programs in the following situations:

1. Upon the occurrence of a second or any subsequent occurrence of a severe disciplinary problem within a three-year period;

2. When the district finds a student's attendance pattern to be so erratic that the student is not benefitting from the educational program;

3. When the district is recommending expulsion as a disciplinary alternative;

4. When a student is expelled pursuant to subsection (3) of ORS 339.250; and

5. When the student or the student's parent or legal guardian notifies the district of intent to withdraw from the program as provided under ORS 339.030(5).

 

The notification to parents, students, or guardians must include the following and be in a manner or language they can understand:

1. Student action which is the basis for consideration of alternative education;

2. Listing of alternative education programs available for this student for which the district would provide financial support;

3. The program recommended for the student is based on student's learning styles and needs; and

4. Procedures for enrolling the student in the recommended program.

 

Whenever parents or guardians desire to request establishment of alternative education programs within the district, they may make such request in writing to the building principal of the assigned school of attendance for their child.

1. The written request should explain the unmet student need and suggest an appropriate solution.

2. The principal shall respond in writing within 30 days of receipt of the written request.

3. If the response provided by the building principal to the parents violates policy or procedure, the parents may appeal the decision to the Superintendent or designee.

4. Parents may at any regular Board meeting appear to make a request for alternative education program under the agenda item, "Hearing of Delegations."

 

The auxiliary services director shall evaluate each alternative education program annually. The program evaluation shall answer the following and demonstrate compliance with supporting documentation.

1. Are students receiving instruction in the state content standards to prepare them to meet appropriate benchmark levels?

2. Are Oregon Statewide Assessment administered and the results reported annually to students and parents?

3. Are students receiving, at least annually, a report of academic progress?

4. Are there shortcomings in program implementation? If so, state program improvement recommendations.
