Use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
The District has made an automated external defibrillator (AED) available for medical emergencies. AEDs are designed to be used on an UNCONSCIOUS-UNRESPONSIVE person. The AED will not function if it does not detect a lethal cardiac rhythm that it is programmed to correct.
The following guidelines are to be followed for use of the automated external defibrillator (AED):
While it is in the best interest of a patient to be treated by a rescuer with the most current and highest training level, the AEDs are designed to be used by the general public. In the event there is not a trained rescuer available, any individual that feels they could be of assistance should attempt to use the AED.
The district must train a sufficient number of employees in the use of the AED so that at least one trained employee may be reasonably expected to be present during school hours.
Any person using the AED on another person must call 9-1-1 or delegate someone to call, immediately prior to or at the earliest opportunity when using the AED and must follow all emergency procedure protocol as outlined in the training and adopted by the district.
The AED, its battery and its electrodes must be maintained, inspected and serviced as recommended by the manufacturer by an individual that has been properly trained in the maintenance and use of the AED and has been designated to do so by the district.
The AED must be stored in a location from which the AED can quickly be retrieved during school hours. The presence and location of each AED must be clearly indicated.
Maintenance, use, and storage of the defibrillator will be in compliance with any applicable state and or federal laws.
